Peer Tutor

In my senior year of high school, I volunteered to be a peer tutor at a 10th grade geometry class every fourth period. These hours counted toward my community service hours. Benefits of becoming a peer tutor gives me the opportunities to build my resume and gain value experience such as strengthen my communication and interpersonal and problem-solving skills; increase mastery of academic skills and course material; develop a sense of pride and accomplishment from helping others; and be involved in tutor training and tutor meetings develop my leadership skills.

Animal Shelter Volunteer

During my free time in the weekends or after school, I usually volunteer at the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando performing different positions include daily enrichment, socialization, exercise, and care of sheltered dogs and cats. I also have responsibilities to show and help the clients for adoption. There are other community-involved activities such as assist with Community Cat Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return (TNVR) efforts to help reduce cat over populations in Central Florida. I hope my volunteer works would contribute to make the community a better place for the animals and raise awareness about the importance of animal welfare! The shelter orientation offers various training programs about first aid, animal care and handling, etc, which can be such a valuable experience if you’re interested in a career in animal welfare.

Buddhism Temple Volunteer and Charity Work

I usually volunteer at a Buddhism temple near my house every Sunday morning. I helps the monks and nuns doing domestic works in the monastery such as cleaning, washing, and preparing for the daily rituals. There is also a charity cooking fund for the temple every Sunday, so it is often very crowded and needs many volunteers to help out. During festivals such as Lunar New Year, Buddha's Birthday, Mid Autumn Festival, or Yulan Festival, there will be various events where helping hands are required. There might even be a change of plans at the last minute so you will have to be proactive and dynamic in managing these events. The atmosphere is really calm and what a relieved time from stress, from school, and from work! It's always such an amazing experience helping them out, and I enjoy doing all volunteer works here! This will teach you a lot about hard work and the lifestyle of the monks and nuns. Also, you will learn to work in a team and manage events during events. Also, the monks will teach their practices and values, which is worth noting.
